Question: I would like to attend tai chi classes at the Al Hikmah school of kung fu. Tai chi is a type of kung fu. The teacher is a male and I am female, and there would be other people in the class. I would be wearing very loose clothes when I go there. I would like to know if it is allowed for me to go to this class.

Answer: Islam has placed strict rules concerning the intermingling of the sexes and has not given an allowance to that which you have asked about. Even though there may be other people in the class and you may wear loose clothing, yet, allowances to be a part of such classes are not to be found in the books of Fiqh and Fatawas. Instead, the Fuqaha (Jurists of Islam) have strongly condemned such conduct since it is in total violation of the teachings regarding hijaab in Islam.
