Questions and Answers
Consuming doubtful food

Question: Can you state the repercussions or punishment for consuming doubtful food and the effect it has upon Salaat and any other relevant information?

Answer: When one consumes doubtful food then he puts himself in a situation which brings about the possibility that he has consumed unlawful (haram) food and there is also a possibility of it not being haram. However, the fact that it is doubtful shows that it is not clearly halal (lawful), this is why it has taken the name of being doubtful. When one becomes doubtful about anything, be it food, drink, actions, etc. the law is that of refraining. It is essential that a person stays away from everything which is deemed to be doubtful. If one consumes that which is doubtful and it happens to be haram (unlawful), then the punishments which are highlighted for this act will be given to this person. In this regard one's acts of worship like that of salaah would be affected. Similarly, his duas would not be accepted, and according to the hadith, the body which has been nourished with unlawful food will burn in the fire of hell. It is therefore compulsory upon all Muslims that they abstain from all that which is deemed to be doubtful and consume only that which is clearly halal (lawful).
