Exchanging of gifts for marriage

Question: Concerning marriage, what are the duties of the girls' parents and boys' parents as to exchanging of gifts?

Answer: Gift exchanging is one that is commendable in Islam, however, in doing so one must refrain from following the customs and culture of non Muslims.

Having said this, it should be noted that in accordance to the teachings of Islam, there is no obligation placed upon the boy's parents or girl's parents with respect to the marriage of their son/daughter. As such, giving gifts to each other cannot be deemed a duty upon any specific individual. Howbeit, if family members/relatives or intended in-laws wish to exchange gifts, then it is permissible to do so. However, one cannot consider it a duty, responsibility or an obligation.
