Question: Is it permissible to take pictures of people etc. using a digital camera or cell phone camera?

Answer: The vast majority of scholars have stated that taking pictures of living beings are totally prohibited in Islam. This includes the humans and animals, and the prohibition is equal in the case of these being in the form of a sculpture, drawings on paper, stitching on clothing or photographs. Pictures taken from the digital camera and a cell phone would fall in the same prohibition, since these produce pictures and are the instruments through which pictures and photographs of animate objects come about.
