Question: For Men / Brothers in Islam, is it mandated that one should wear the beard?

Answer: The keeping of the beard is essential and shaving it is totally haram (unlawful) and hence, sinful. The Prophet (s.a.s) has clearly commanded his followers in the following manner, 'Trim (cut) the moustache and lengthen the beard.' (Recorded by Muslim in his Saheeh from the tradition of Abdullah bin Umar (r.a)).

Abdullah bin Umar (r.a) has also narrated that the Prophet (s.a.s) ordered that the moustache be shortened and that the beard be allowed to grow. (Muslim). The length of the beard is to the extent of one hand's fist. Whatever is longer than this can be trimmed. However, it is not permissible to cut it shorter than this length.
