Reciting Darood Shareef in salaah

Question: In a four rakah salah, is it permissible to say Darood Sharif, while in jalsa after two rakaats? Please state whether this was practiced by the Prophet (S.A.W) or whether it is a newly innovated matter.

Answer: In a four rakaah salaah, it is not permissible to say the Darood Shareef (after the tashahud) in the jalsa of the second rakaah. It is authentically reported that the Prophet (s.a.s) would stand for the third rakaah after the tashahud and would not recite anything more than the tashahud in the first sitting. In this regard, Aisha (r.a.) narrates that the Prophet (s.a.s) never exceeded the tashahud in the second rakaah. (Musnad Abu Yala).

Abdullah bin Masood (r.a) has also narrated that the Prophet (s.a.s) would stand up for the third rakaah as soon as he recited the tashahud in the first sitting. (Musnad Ahmad; Saheeh Ibn Khuzaima; Sunan An Nasai; Tirmizi).

It is therefore clearly established that one must stand up immediately after the tashahud in the first sitting in order to complete the remaining rakaats of salaah.

And Allah knows best.
